What is a deepfake?
A deepfake is synthetic or manipulated media created or altered with AI so a person appears to say or do something they did not. It may involve a synthetic voice, altered video, face replacement or fabricated image. Not every AI-generated image is deceptive; the risk depends on context and whether people are misled.
Familiar signals are not proof
People rely on familiar voices, recognisable faces and professional-looking messages. These signals can help, but they are not conclusive proof. An impersonation attempt may combine a familiar voice with public information and urgency. Do not treat one signal as sufficient evidence for a high-consequence decision.
Verify identity and context independently
Start by asking what the content wants you to believe or do. If a familiar person makes an unusual request, use a separate trusted channel and a number already saved in your address book. For workplace payment requests, follow callback and approval procedures.
Ask where the content first appeared, whether the source is accountable, whether the full context is available and whether credible sources corroborate the claim. Visual imperfections alone are not a reliable detector; compression can make genuine media look strange.
Use detection tools carefully
AI detection tools may provide useful signals, but their results vary with media quality, compression and the generation method. Treat a detector as one input among several, not a final verdict. For consequential decisions, prioritise provenance, reliable sources and independent verification.
Build a verification habit
Before trusting consequential digital content, ask:
- Who is the original source?
- What action is this content asking me to take?
- Can I verify the identity through another trusted channel?
- Would acting immediately bypass an important safeguard?
- Who should I consult if I remain uncertain?
What individuals can do today
Agree on safe ways to verify unusual requests with family and colleagues. Protect personal information that could be misused in impersonation attempts, secure account recovery options and use multifactor authentication where available. Most importantly, avoid forwarding alarming content before checking its source.
AI changes how digital content can be created, but it does not remove the importance of judgement. When the stakes are high, verify the identity and the request independently.
